Trust Your Gut Instincts

It is so important to trust your gut instincts when it comes to your health.

Don’t underestimate your initial instincts. You are very intuitive. Believe in what you think.

Remember when you were a kid and you’d be taking a multiple choice test and everyone always said, “trust your first instinct”? And then do you also remember going over your answers before you handed in your exam and ferociously erasing and changing your answer in the last few seconds? How often was the change the right thing to do? I’ll bet almost never.

But we are not kids anymore. Now, instead of a written test we are playing with our health.

I have spent years teaching people that when it comes to diet and health, food and herbs, exercise programs, and meditation… that one size does NOT fit all. This is where the importance of learning to trust your gut instincts is vital.

Here’s What Happened To Me

Here’s an example of what I mean: For the past few weeks I participated in a pretty intense detoxification program. This isn’t my first rodeo… I can do almost any cleanse and be fine. I really was looking forward to this one because it made so much sense. It was scientifically sound and was very well thought out and there was amazing support throughout the whole thing. After week one I felt great. After week 2, I felt great. Then the sh*t hit the fan. I had read ahead and I knew that the next phase didn’t seem like it made sense for ME. So, why didn’t I stop?

I will still continue to learn and to listen to other experts, always. But this doesn’t mean I will ever put away my common sense and replace it with what works for someone else — no matter how impressive an expert they are.

I have spent many years learning and have earned several advanced degrees just so I can know what works for me and what works for others. But, I proceeded anyway, knowing that what was coming usually doesn’t work for me. So, I got ill. I mean, more than just detox ill. And it lasted for about a week. I’m finally getting back on track. My positive take on all of this is that I have now relearned how important it is to trust your gut instincts. Now, this time for sure… I will remember to always think for myself. To trust what I know.

So, Are The Experts Lying?

Any expert who tells you they have the “perfect” program is lying because no one program works for everyone. We are all wonderfully, beautifully, unique. That’s why I am so thankful for my Chinese medicine training. It has taught me to figure out what’s going on inside each individual person so that I can treat myself different from the way I treat you and different still from my neighbor. One size never fits all. And YOU are awesome. So, trust your instincts. You do YOU like nobody else can.

Gut instincts are not a non-scientific thing… yes I realize the double negative popping out. There are tons of science-based articles on why you need to trust yourself, so I’ll give you one here that I saw in Newsweek.  And here’s another take on it from The Chopra Center. So listen to me and listen to them. But more importantly, listen to yourself and trust your gut instincts.
