The Least Painful Way To Do A Detox Diet
Okay. You’re ready. Today is day one. You are going to eat clean but first you need to detox. There are many ways to do this, but this is the least painful way to do a detox diet… and you may even enjoy it!
Just the word “detox” makes people uncomfortable. Years ago, detox was a word that was only used in conjunction with drug or alcohol indulgence. It makes total sense — if you think about it — that the detoxification process should be applied to foods too.
I mean, if food is medicine — which it is — that if you ingest the wrong foods/medicines, you will need to get these out of your system, just like you would have to get drugs and alcohol out of your system.
You may not want to hear this, but detoxing from foods can be as challenging as detoxing from other substances. Did you know that cheese is actually one of the most addictive substances around? Yup. It’s harder for some people to give up their cheese habit than it is for them to quit smoking.
Yikes…
So, here it is the end of the summer. You have really enjoyed yourself. You’ve been treating yourself and eating all of those things that you normally are so good about staying away from. You know what I’m talking about…
All the donuts.
The fresh gooey cheeses.
Those margaritas and cold beers.
And the bread… so much bread…
But now you are ready. It’s Day One. What’s your plan?
Too many people start a detox diet without a real plan and oftentimes this leads to… ummmm… less than desirable results. But you are not going to be one of those people. You are going to follow the guidelines below and you are going to kick those sugar-bread-cheese-alcohol cravings in the butt.
This is something I do often. I do it with clients. I do it alone. I do it with my friends and family. And I’m not crazy. And it’s not that hard. Believe me when I tell you that if you eat the right things while you are detoxing, your cravings won’t get the best of you. And you are going to have more energy, your brain fog will lift, your aches and pains will lessen, your mood will lift, you will lose weight, and you will sleep better.

Follow These Rules For The Least Painful Way To Do A Detox Diet
1. Remove ALL Sweeteners From Your Diet
I’m aware that this sounds really painful. But give me a chance to explain.
A lot of times when people detox and say they are not going to eat sugar for the length of the detox, they remove the sugar, but they still eat other sweeteners. Even eating healthy sweeteners makes it more difficult for you to successfully get off the sugar. When you eat something sweet — even if it’s healthy — your brain registers that sweetness and it triggers the need for more sweet things.
So, during regular times, it may be perfectly acceptable to eat honey, pure maple syrup, coconut sugar, or even stevia. But, if you eat these things during your detox period, the sweet-craving center of your brain registers that sweetness and demands more sweet things.
So, while it may sound painful to remove all sweets, it’s actually easier. And, after a few days, your body won’t crave sweets anymore. Really. I mean it…
2. Make A Huge Pot Of Soup
One of the things that makes it so much more comfortable for me to go on a detox diet, is to cook up a huge pot of healthy soup and keep it in the fridge. I’ll make a different type of soup at the beginning of each week. This way, when I start thinking too much and if I start to feel deprived, there’s always something deliciously comforting to grab.
If you are only going to cook one thing, make it a great pot of soup.
Scroll down, and you’ll see a few of my favorite soup recipes…
3. Make Creative Sandwiches And Wraps
One of the hardest things for people to give up is bread. Bread turns to sugar in your body, so if you read the earlier section on giving up sugar, the same applies for bread. If you give up all grains and not just gluten, you’ll be making your detox easier and your cravings will go away much faster.
But, you can still enjoy a handheld lunch with these awesome wrap substitutes:
- Nori/seaweed wraps
- Almond flour tortillas
- Blanched collard leaves
Try spreading some hummus on a nori wrap and topping it with some bell pepper strips, avocado, and sprouts… yum!
Make some tuna fish with olive oil, scallions, and a little mustard and roll it up in an almond flour tortilla with lots of fresh tomatoes and maybe some hot peppers…
Take your leftover dinner (fish, chicken, etc.) and wrap it up in a blanched collard leaf. This works especially good with all types of burgers and meatballs…
You won’t miss the bread if you can still eat deliciously with your hands. It’s a great way to trick your brain into thinking it’s having a sandwich and you will love the taste.
4. Keep Bone Broth Handy
Many times, when people get hungry on a detox, a hot beverage helps. And, most of the time, the beverage of choice is tea. Tea is great. I even wrote an article on 5 Chinese Teas That Will Heal You. So, you know I love my teas.
But, when I’m on a detox program, I find that having a steaming cup of bone broth in my favorite mug is the way to go. Bone broth is healing, it’s satisfying, it’s comforting, and it will fill you up.
Bone broth is available in many markets now, and you can even order it on line. I’ve been using this organic bone broth and I’m loving it — it really hits the spot!
5. Substitute Kombucha And Other Beverages For Alcoholic Drinks
This is the one exception to my no sweet things rule when I detox. I keep a few bottles of kombucha in my fridge, and when others are enjoying a cocktail, I pour a half of a bottle of my kombucha into a martini glass or a wine glass, and I sip on that. It’s sweet, but it’s also carbonated and it’s healing.
It makes it much easier to be around people who are indulging if you have a good drink too.
Another trick I use often, is when I’m out at a bar or restaurant, I will ask for a martini glass filled with ice water and a splash of lime juice. This looks like a cocktail. It tastes really refreshing. And you can nurse it for awhile.
It’s another mind over matter thing.
6. Take The Guesswork Out Of Snacking
If you have to think about it too much, you probably shouldn’t be having it.
Don’t eat anything that comes in a bag or a box.
There you go. Snacks severely limited, but it takes the whole thought process down to a really easy level.
One More Thing…
Use The Buddy System
If you can detox with a buddy, it really is easier. Some people think this is because misery loves company, but I don’t think that’s it. If you follow my rules you won’t feel miserable at all. But it’s great to have a buddy who you can share the positive feelings you are experiencing. For example, when you start to notice that you have more energy than you’ve had in a long time, you’ll have someone to go running with. When you notice that your skin is looking awesome, you’ll have someone to look in the mirror with, and so on.
And, if you don’t have a detox buddy, I’m offering to be yours. Just sign up for a free phone consultation with me. A Few Detox Recipes:
If you make any of these recipes that are part of the least painful way to do a detox diet, please be sure to let me know in the comments below. I love hearing how you like a recipe, and I love to answer your questions! If you make it, be sure to take a photo and tag me and post it on Instagram.
1. Pan Seared Salmon With Bruschetta Sauce
This is the most delicious salmon you will ever have. And the whole recipe is made with only 5 ingredients. It’s detox friendly and it’s even good enough for entertaining.
2. Instant Pot Spring Vegetable Soup
The beauty of this soup is that it’s cleansing, but it’s hearty. It’s made with buckwheat, which mimics pasta… but buckwheat is actually a seed, not a grain so you feel really satisfied.
3. Beet Sweet Potato Soup
This soup tastes sweet, but it’s detox friendly… this is one of my favorites.
